Infrared sauna product descriptions frequently use terms such as Near Infrared, Mid Infrared, Far Infrared, and Full Spectrum. These terms describe portions of the infrared spectrum, but they do not automatically tell you how a sauna is constructed, how its heaters operate, or which additional wellness features are included.

Near, Mid, Far & Full Spectrum

Scientific and commercial sources may use somewhat different wavelength boundaries. The ranges below follow the broad classifications already used in this guide and should be treated as orientation rather than a complete description of a specific sauna heater.

Near Infrared

Approximately 0.78–3 μm

The infrared region closest to visible red light. Sauna products may deliver it through dedicated lamps, bulbs, or other specialized emitters.

Approximately 3–50 μm

The region between Near and Far Infrared. It may be identified as part of a multi-spectrum or combined-heater system.

Spectrum is only one part of the product.

The spectrum label does not fully explain heater type, emitter placement, output distribution, cabin temperature, EMF classification, red light features, electrical requirements, or overall sauna quality.

The Basics

What Does Infrared Spectrum Mean?

Infrared is a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum located beyond visible red light. Because infrared wavelengths cover a broad range, the spectrum is commonly divided into Near, Mid, and Far Infrared regions.

Near Infrared in a Sauna

Near Infrared may be produced through dedicated lamps, bulbs, or specialized emitters rather than the larger heating panels commonly associated with Far Infrared cabins.

A manufacturer should identify the type and location of the Near Infrared emitters. The words “Full Spectrum” alone do not explain how Near Infrared is delivered around the cabin.

Mid Infrared in a Sauna

Mid Infrared may be included as part of a multi-spectrum heating system, although the exact emitter design and wavelength output vary by product.

Review whether the manufacturer identifies a separate Mid Infrared emitter or describes Mid Infrared as part of a combined Full Spectrum system.

Far Infrared in a Sauna

Far Infrared is widely used in residential infrared saunas. Models may use carbon heating panels, ceramic emitters, or another manufacturer-specific heater design positioned throughout the cabin.

Operating temperature, warm-up behavior, heater coverage, and the overall sensation still vary by model.

How Full Spectrum Is Built

Not Every Full Spectrum Sauna Uses the Same Heater Design

A Full Spectrum infrared sauna is generally marketed as providing Near, Mid, and Far Infrared. The phrase does not guarantee that every heater produces all three regions or that the output is distributed equally throughout the cabin.

Separate Emitters

Some models use dedicated Near Infrared lamps or bulbs together with Far Infrared heating panels elsewhere in the cabin.

Combination Heaters

Other models use multi-spectrum or combination heaters described by the manufacturer as producing more than one infrared region.

Brand-Specific Systems

Manufacturers may use proprietary emitter layouts, terminology, or control systems that require model-specific comparison.

When comparing Full Spectrum models, look for the heater count, emitter type, placement, control options, and the manufacturer’s explanation of how Near, Mid, and Far Infrared are delivered.

Important Distinction

Does Full Spectrum Mean Red Light Therapy?

No. Full Spectrum infrared and red light therapy are not interchangeable terms.

Full Spectrum Infrared

Describes an infrared heating system marketed as providing Near, Mid, and Far Infrared through one or more heater or emitter technologies.

Red Light Therapy Feature

Generally refers to a separate visible-red and/or Near Infrared LED system specifically identified by the manufacturer as a red light feature.

Look for a separately verified feature.

A Full Spectrum sauna should only be described as including red light therapy when the manufacturer specifically identifies a dedicated red light system or integrated red/Near Infrared LED panel. Decorative red lighting, chromotherapy, and the visible glow from a heating element should not automatically be classified as red light therapy.
